CMR podcast

GS4S and DignityFIRM are coordinated by Radboud University. FIERI, guest of this episode, is a partner in both projects.
Welcome to the CMR Podcast's mini-series about the Horizon Europe project GS4S – Global Strategy for Skills, Migration and Development. In this project – running from 2024 to 2026 - fourteen partners from ten countries seek to better understand global skills shortages in the digital, care, and construction sectors, and foster skills development through innovative analyses. The project proposes multi-level evidence-based policies on labour migration governance and alternative ways to address these shortages in six regions: EU, EEA, Western Balkan, Middle East and Northern Africa, West Africa, and South/South-East Asia. In a mini-series of six podcasts, we will present some GS4S results and discuss their policy implications.
In the fourth episode of the GS4S mini-series, we explore barriers migrants in Europe face when accessing labor market or training opportunities. Prof. Tesseltje de Lange, director of the Centre for Migration Law, is joined by Ferruccio Pastore and Sara Korbi from FIERI, an independent and nonprofit association that has conducted research on migratory phenomena for more than 20 years. Ferruccio and Sara lead qualitative GS4S research on migrant skill waste and have recently published a GS4S comparative report on the topic (see show notes).
Ferruccio Pastore is the director of FIERI since 2009. He was previously deputy director of the Centre of International Policy Studies (CeSPI), a think-tank based in Rome. He is International fellow of the Institut Convergences Migrations in Paris and a member of the Expert Group on Economic Migration (EGEM) of the European Commission. Besides research, he actively participates in the public debate on migration policies at national and international level.
Sara Korbi holds a BA in International and Diplomacy Studies at the University of Trieste and a MA in International Relations at the University of Torino, where she specialized in Migration Studies. She also has practical experience in the field of international protection and international humanitarian law, gained through internships (Territorial Commission for the Recognition of International Protection, Gorizia; Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations, Geneva; UNHCR Representation to the EU, Brussels). She also worked as a legal officer at a reception center for asylum seekers managed by the Italian Red Cross.
Since 2022, after being awarded a Migricerca II scholarship for social research aimed at young people with a migrant background, she has been working steadily with FIERI, focusing in particular on the social and labor market inclusion of migrants.
The Horizon Europe project GS4S was funded by the European Union. We thank Boris Athmer and Dennis Arns from Radboud University for their help with recording, editing and publishing this episode.

In the seventh episode of the CMR Podcast, Karen Geertsema has a conversation with Tineke Strik, professor Citizenship and Migration Law at Radboud University and member of the European Parliament, and Ellen DeSmet, associate professor of migration law at the Migration Law Research Group at Ghent University, Belgium.
In this episode, a new publication is launched: a book on 20 years of the family reunification directive. This volume is the result of a gathering of experts at the Centre for Migration Law at Radboud University, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the EU Family Reunification Directive (FRD) back in November 2023. DeSmet, Strik and Geertsema discuss recent developments in family migration as EU member states have moved towards more restrictive policies on family reunification.

In the second episode of the GS4S mini-series, Colleen Boland and Ksenija Ivanović have a conversation with Tommaso Frattini, a labor economist specializing in economics of migration at the Associazione Centro Studi Luca d'Agliano, one of partner organizations at GS4S.
Frattini coordinates the Migration Research area at the Centro Studi Luca d’Agliano. He is also Professor of Economics at the University of Milan, co-director of the Global Migration Information Hub at Rockwool Foundation Berlin, and a Research Fellow at CEPR, Dondena and Institute of Labor Economics in Berlin.
In this episode, Frattini discusses the overeducation of tertiary-educated migrants (coming from both EU Member States and third countries) in European labour markets and explores the immigrant-native gap in overeducation levels. Frattini elaborates on policy implications of this research, and in particularly the importance of improved procedures for recognition of foreign qualifications, better facilitation of language learning and other types of integration measures to improve labor market entry.

In a mini-series of six podcasts, we will present some of GS4S results, and discuss their policy implications.
In the first episode of the GS4S mini-series, Colleen Boland and Ksenija Ivanović have a conversation with Mahdi Ghodsi, an Economist at the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw), one of partner organizations at GS4S.
Ghodsi has extensive experience in applied econometrics, macroeconomic modelling, and data science, with a particular focus on global markets, trade policy, trade regulations, financial and labour market analysis, migration policy, economics of sanctions, and Iran's economy. Recently, he led GS4S research on the role of skills shortages in shaping migration aspirations in the Western Balkans.
In this episode, Ghodsi discusses the relevance and key findings of the GS4S research. He reflects on challenges encountered during the process, and how these were overcome to result in novel indicators of skills shortages. The episode also digs deeper into the policy implications of skills-oriented migration from the Western Balkans to the European Union.

Als onderdeel van het 'Stranger Families Project' is recent haar artikel, getiteld Doing Family before the State. Does recognition of de facto families lead to more inclusive migration law practices? gepubliceerd door Social Politics.

In the third CMR podcast, assistant professors of Sociology of Law and Migration Law Karen Geertsema and Ricky van Oers have a conversation with Professor of Human Rights Jasper Krommendijk. They discuss the topic of his recent oration 'The effectiveness of human rights in a multilevel legal order under threat?'
Human rights and the rule of law have been under pressure in recent years. On the one hand, human rights courts and monitoring bodies are increasingly challenged by populist politicians. On the other hand, there is also criticism from academic quarters: they would, for instance, fail to address socio-economic inequality and reason too much top-down. Reason for concern? Yes. Reason for pessimism? No. This is the main thrust of Krommendijk's inaugural lecture.
